The trailer for the upcoming live-action remake Sonic The Hedgehog has dropped and it sure is a ride.

The blue, furry character, voiced by Ben Schwartz, makes his mad dash onto our screens and is joined by Jim Carrey (Dr Robotnik) and co, as punters attempt to track down the little lad running amok in the US.

While we’ve had a glimpse of what the gaming character, made in the Sega world, may look like in the film it’s fair to say his likeness has smashed past perceptions.

Because fans weren’t too keen – but lo and behold he looks alright!

Same goes for Carrey, who is on the hunt for the Gatorade-hued creature who teams up with a small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) in the fight against the comedian’s government scientist, with a penchant for facial topiary.

There are many links to Sonic’s gaming beginnings, including some very well-placed rings that replaced the Paramount stars and sound effects that bring back the nostalgia of the 90s.

Also, the town in which this is based, Green Hills, is a nice riff on the first level of the game. Did you pick up on that?

Eyebrows were raised when the soundtrack sported Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise though, with punters not too sure how that fit into the child-friendly film.

Fans were divided but hopeful, as the trailer made its way onto social media and we all, frankly, lost our proverbial. Because divided or not, this is big!

‘Tbh the plot seems to be very Sonic-like, I’m excited!’ one wrote on Twitter. ‘Sonic looks weird while talking tho, but maybe it’s something to get used to.’

Another totally optimistic follower wrote: ‘The sonic trailer isn’t even as bad as I thought it was going to be tbh.’

Earlier today the first image of Carrey as Robotnik was leaked, with people feeling the whole thing was looking like a good sign this movie might go down a treat in cinemas.

The in-game Dr Robotnik, or Eggman as he is more frequently known nowadays, has such freakish body proportions it’d be impossible to look like him without a serious cosplay effort, but Carrey’s portrayal still manages to look pretty much on point.

Nicely done!

The thing follows hot on the heels of Ryan Reynolds’ turn as Detective Pikachu, though, so of course there are going to be many a comparison to the two beloved characters with their big screen forays.

While we’re not going to create a rift between the two (you all do your thing, do your thing), one did point out the possible point of contention between the fandoms: ‘I think the difference might be that in Detective Pikachu, there are CGI things everywhere, where as in Sonic, he’s the only one.’

We just have one thought – isn’t Sonic meant to be spiky and not furry? Eh, can’t win ’em all.

Sonic The Hedgehog is in cinemas soon.
