Sometimes I think I’m the only one that’s happy with my PS5 – Reader’s Feature

Are people being too down on the PS5? (Sony)

A reader feels exasperated about the constant bad news for gaming and admits that he’s been perfectly happy with the PS5 so far.

It’s becoming increasingly hard to feel any positivity about the games industry at the moment. Even as it’s proven that it’s been a great year for games, and the rest of the year is looking pretty good too. I realise there’s major problems going on in terms of job layoffs, and I’m not heartless about that, but at the same time there’s nothing I can do about it – except buy and play their games so at least they don’t get sacked for making flops.

I bought my PlayStation 5 early in 2021 and I have been very happy with it since day one. I got Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales with it and both were excellent in very different ways. Astro’s Playroom was an unexpected (and free) bonus and that was very good too, one of the best launch games I’ve ever played, in fact.

I got Returnal a couple of months later and that was even better. I’ve seen people argue the graphics could’ve been done on PlayStation 4 but whether that’s true or not it’s one of the best games I’ve played in a long time and a very clever mix of third person shooter, bullet hell, and roguelike.

The next game I got was Horizon Forbidden West, which to this day has the best graphics I’ve ever seen in a game. Yes, the gameplay isn’t as good by comparison, but it’s not bad and I didn’t find it too easy.

From there I went to God Of War Ragnarök, which was every bit as good as the last game and very emotional at the end. Then, bringing me up to date, I got Helldivers 2 this year, which has been, and continues to be, excellent.

This is, of course, in addition to non-exclusive third party games and there are other exclusives that have reviewed very well but which don’t appeal to me. (I’ve never liked Final Fantasy and Stellar Blade isn’t really my thing – although I may give it a try if it goes on cheap.)

My point is that I think that is a very good line-up of games for the first three years and that’s just what I happen to have played, not the total of everything that’s available. I realise the schedules have slowed down a lot recently but it’s not like they’ve stopped, with Sony sensibly filling the gaps with paid exclusives.

I’m not trying to downplay the problems in the games industry, but I’ll admit I barely understand them and I can assure you ordinary customers have no idea it’s even happening. Is the PlayStation 5 going to go down as the best console of all-time? I don’t know, probably not. But that seems a pretty extreme expectation.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s a very successful follow-up to the PlayStation 5 and at the moment I’m already looking forward to Astro Bot and, based on Helldivers 2, Concord.

I hope the games industry sorts itself out, I really do, but in terms of providing me with a variety of fun games to play, that are good value for money, I have no real complaints about the PlayStation 5 at all.
