'SNL': Kate McKinnon returns as Kellyanne Conway in press conference for hero dog Conan

“Saturday Night Live” was light on political humor in Saturday’s episode, save for a few scattered jokes throughout about Beto O’Rourke dropping out of the 2020 presidential race, and the cold open dedicated solely to Kate McKinnon’s impression of a comically earnest Elizabeth Warren.

Instead, the funniest, most topical sketch went straight to the dogs.

In a fake press conference hosted by White House counselor Kellyanne Conway (McKinnon) — who joked that past press secretaries have been “forced to regain their dignity on ‘Dancing with the Stars'” — hero dog Conan, the K-9 Commando, took questions from journalists.

But despite the dog’s bonafides of helping kill an Islamic State leader during a U.S. special operations raid, Conan still fielded innocuous questions such as “Are you a good boy?” and “You were involved in a terrorist raid. Was that scary for you?”

“SNL” cast member Cecily Strong stole the sketch as a special-forces canine interpreter, feigning Conan’s disgust with a Photoshopped picture of President Donald Trump honoring him with a medal that the commander in chief shared earlier this week.

“And speaking of costumes, what is this janky fake medal the president put on my neck?” Strong said. “It just has a picture of a paw on it, what the (expletive) is that?”

Saturday’s “SNL” episode was hosted by “Charlie’s Angel” actress Kristen Stewart with musical guest Coldplay.
