SNK Reveals World Championship for Samurai Shodown, The King of Fighters XIV

Japanese game publisher SNK Corporation has announced the SNK World Championship, a global tournament series that includes both Samurai Shodown and The King of Fighters XIV.

The series will feature a prize pool in excess of JP¥10M ($94.5K USD), with regional qualifiers leading up to a global finals event in Tokyo on March 28-29, 2020. Each game will feature 16 players at the finals, with further details on the tournament and qualifying structure still to be announced.

Samurai Shodown was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June, and was a featured title at last month’s Evo 2019 event. The game pulled in a total of 1,719 registered players at Evo, making it the fourth-largest title based on the number of competitors. According to Esports Earnings, $51.1K has been awarded so far in Samurai Shodown competitions, the majority of which came from Evo.

The King of Fighters XIV, meanwhile, was released in 2016 and was featured at Evo back in 2017. To date, the game’s tournaments have awarded $54.3K, via Esports Earnings. At Evo 2019, SNK announced a 2020 release for sequel The King of Fighters XV.
