Sky Cinema have got a brand new selection of movies hitting their channel in December ready for Christmas, and if you’re a fan of family-friendly films or a Star Wars fan looking to relive the saga from the start, you won’t be disappointed.

With Christmas fast-approaching, Sky have got your festive film needs covered with the brand new Grinch film and feel-good movie Mary Poppins Returns, while those counting down the days until the release of the new Star Wars movie will love re-watching both classic and contemporary installments from the saga so far.

You can also expect Hollywood blockbusters, gripping dramas and a collection of much-loved musicals to keep the whole family happy during the Christmas holidays.

So what’s going to be on Sky Cinema for festive break? Here are the new releases to look forward to from Sky in December 2019.

Sky Movies new releases – December 2019

The Grinch (2018) – December 6

Not the Jim Carrey original Grinch film but the animated remake that was released last year, Sky Cinema are bringing the green festive-hating Dr Seuss character to the screen for the build up to Christmas.

With Benedict Cumberbatch voicing The Grinch and singer Pharrell Williams lending his voice as the narrator, this is a movie sure to get everyone in the festive spirit (yes, even the Ginch-iest of family members!)

Escape Room – December 7

An action-thriller inspired by the current phenomenon for team-building Escape Rooms, this movie follows the story of a group of people who must work together to try and solve an escape puzzle – because their lives depend on it.

Not one to watch if you’re hoping for a quiet night in, this movie promises plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments and scares.

Mary, Queen of Scots – December 22

Starring, Academy Award-nominated actresses Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, this epic historical drama maps the complex relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots.

Margot Robbie went through a huge transformation to portray Elizabeth I and the stars were reportedly ‘kept apart’ while filming the movie to heighten the rivalry on-screen between the leading ladies.

Mary Poppins Returns – December 25

Just in time for Christmas Day, the modern adaption of the much-loved family classic starring Emily Blunt comes flying in, umbrella in hand, to land on Sky on December 25.

Also starring Ben Whishaw, Meryl Streep, and Lin Manuel Miranda, this musical tale revisits Jane and Michael as adults, as their magical nanny from childhood returns once again to help the Banks family.

Avengers: Endgame – December 26

A Boxing Day movie for Marvel fans, Disney’s final film in the Avengers saga joins Sky in time for you to watch your favourite characters reunite in a nail-biting conclusion to a story that began over 10 years ago with Iron Man in 2008.

Avengers: Endgame smashed multiple records after its release, including becoming the biggest selling movie of all time, despite the fact that the ending left some fans reeling.

The Aftermath – December 31

Made in association with the BBC, The Aftermath stars Keira Knightley as Rachael, a woman who lives in post-war Hamburg with her British army colonel husband and discovers that some wounds left by war can’t be healed.

Also starring Big Little Lies actor Alexander Skarsgård as brooding architect Stefan, this historical drama is another interesting turn for 34-year-old Knightley.
