Sky has announced that is going to develop a major new studio for TV and film projects in Elstree.

The 32-acre lot will be located in North London and will be in close collaboration with the world-famous Elstree Studios, which over the years has played host to Star Wars, Paddington and Big Brother, and is currently home to Strictly Come Dancing.

The studios will be composed of 14 sound stages each and will cover about 20,000 square feet of land, which we’re sure you’ll agree is quite a lot.

Jeremy Darroch, group chief executive at Sky, said: ‘Sky Studios Elstree will play a pivotal role in bringing the wealth of UK and European talent and creativity to the world.

‘We know our customers love our award-winning Sky Originals like Chernobyl and our investment in Sky Studios Elstree will enable us to bring more unique stories to more viewers.’

In a tweet, Sky itself also confirmed that the site will create 2,000 new jobs and will kickstart £3billion in investment for the UK’s creative economy.

Roger Morris, the managing director of the already existing Elstree Studios said: ‘Sky Studios Elstree will be of immense importance to the UK Film and Television industry.

‘It will not only boost the local economy of Hertsmere and Hertfordshire, but will also have a major impact on the UK’s creative sector as a whole.

‘We are extremely proud that Sky Studios Elstree has chosen to locate near us and we look forward to working closely with them.’

Sky is currently on fire right now with its original TV programming. Dark comic-drama Upright, starring Tim Minchin, is a Fleabag-esque re-invention for the musical comic and is his way of re-writing stereotypical Australian representation on-screen.

We also reviewed the return of historical drama Britannia, which stars Mackenzie Crook and David Morrisey, who we praised as ‘great.’

Finally, the international thriller Rivera has just added a Sherlock star to its roster for the incoming third season.

Sky Studios Elstree is coming in 2022.
