Sir Paul McCartney has revealed one of his grandsons was mugged at knifepoint in London.

The 77-year-old rock star has eight grandchildren – six of whom are boys aged between seven and 20 – but didn’t identify which of the boys was attacked.

He admitted however that the young boy felt like a ‘coward’ for not retaliating with a punch.

‘In London, one of my grandkids, one of my older grandkids, was mugged and got his phone taken,’ said Sir Paul, speaking to The Times.

‘He was saying the worst thing was that he should have just thumped the guy; he came back and felt a coward.

‘I said: “No, no, no, no! The guy had a knife and you don’t know, the guy might be able to use that knife”.

‘So it is scary these days.’

Sir Paul’s daughters Mary, 49, and Stella, 47, each have four children, with Mary welcoming four boys and Stella two.

The Beatles singer-songwriter has written a children’s book called Hey, Grandude! based on their nickname for him, expected out in September, but he’s also still performing.

The legendary musician, however, recently confessed that he has to relearn some of the older tunes or rely on band members to jog his memory.

To be fair, the little-known pop group have got a pretty solid back catalogue of tracks, with some of The Beatles’ early songs dating back 55 years.

Plus, poor Paul’s worked on more than 1,000 songs in his career.

‘I have to re-learn everything. I’ve written an awful lot, you can’t retain them all. We go in rehearsal and I’m, “Oh yeah, that’s how it goes,”’ he told The Mirror.

When asked if he thinks the songs are ‘pretty good,’ Paul replied: ‘I do, I really do. Some of the old songs you say, “Oh, that’s clever, I wouldn’t have done that”.

‘It’s exciting to think that still works. We were a little rock and roll group from Liverpool, it just kept going.’
