Elton John has been a Sir since 1998, when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to charity.

And 21 years on, he’s getting an upgrade.

The 72-year-old has been appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour in the New Year Honours list – making his rather brilliant year even better.

The music legend will now be Sir Elton Hercules John, CH, CBE after receiving the honour for his services to music and charity.

He joins an exclusive group of people including Sir David Attenborough, David Hockney, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Vera Lynn, Sir Paul McCartney, JK Rowling, Delia Smith and Margaret Atwood, who have been appointed to the order.

The Order of the Companions of Honour is limited to 65 members – with Elton making number 62, and Sir Keith Vivian Thomas (for services to the studio of history) making 63.

Space is rapidly running out.

Elton, who was given a CBE in 1995, can use the post-nominal letters CH if he chooses, but the order doesn’t come with an extra title.

The announcement came in the New Year Honour list, with a host of celebrities from showbiz, music, TV and film being acknowledged by the Queen.

Olivia Newton-John has received her Damehood for services to charity, cancer research and entertainment, while The Great British Bake Off’s Nadiya Hussain and Ainsley Harriott both gets MBEs.

Directors Sam Mendes and Steve McQueen are receiving knighthoods, Queen’s Roger Taylor gets an OBE and Hamilton star Giles Terera gets an MBE.
