He told Only Fools And Horses fans in Bedford: “There was something about the character.

“It was a bit pious.

“I could not see myself doing it.

“Not for me, mate.”

Sir David also said he nearly landed the part of Corporal Jones in BBC classic Dad’s Army.

He recalled: “I got a call from my agent. He said, ‘You know you have this part in Dad’s Army? Well you haven’t now’.”

But he said he would have been “trapped” playing Jones, whose part went to Clive Dunn.

Earlier this month, fans were paying up to £375 to have their picture taken with Sir David.

He was the guest of honour at an exhibition where his character’s old flat was reconstructed.
