Sir David Attenborough is set to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Rose d’Or Awards for his 60-year career in television.
The natural historian, 94, will be honoured during a virtual ceremony organisers have announced, in honour of his work across six decades.
The Rose d’Or Awards celebrate achievement in entertainment programming and have been running since 1961.
Sir David said: ‘Television has achieved a great thing worldwide, making people everywhere aware of what’s happening to our environment.
‘If I’ve been a part of that and if this is a reward for that, well then, I thank you very much indeed. I’m most grateful.’
The much-loved star is one of the most recognisable faces – and of course voices – on British TV, and is best known for programmes including The Blue Planet II, Planet Earth II and Seven Worlds One Planet.
The awards will take place on December 9, hosted by comedian Nish Kumar, and Sir David will join virtually to share his acceptance speech.
Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones will also be honoured on the night as the inaugural recipient of the Rose d’Or emerging talent award, with Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa taking home the 2020 performance of the year award for his portrayal of Eric in the hit Netflix show.
The shortlist for this year’s awards was voted for by over 80 international judges from across the TV industry and includes entries from around the world in all 12 categories.
As well as receiving his lifetime achievement award, this year also saw Sir David smash the Instagram record for fastest to reach one million followers when he joined in September.
Sir David’s account reach one million followers in just over four hours after sharing his first post, beating the record that had previously been held by Friends star Jennifer Aniston.
