TV legend David Attenborough made a surprise appearance on the final day of Glastonbury festival making him one of the oldest people to speak on the Pyramid stage.

There are many places we would expect the 93-year-old to be on a Sunday afternoon and Glasto was not definitely on that list.

But that is exactly what happened as the broadcaster and naturalist praised the mega-festival for going plastic free.

The presenter said his series Blue Planet 2, which focused on the effect of plastics on the ocean, had had an extraordinary effect.

He told the crowd: ‘Now this great festival has gone plastic free. That is more than a million bottles of water have not been drunk by you in plastic. Thank you! Thank you!’

The festival-goers cheered as he continued: ‘The ocean covers two-thirds of this planet of ours … the land only covers one third of the globe. There are seven great continents on which we human beings live.

‘Each of them has its own marvellous creatures – birds and mammals, animals of all kinds. Each of them has its own glory, each of them has its own problems.’

His appearance was a little more epic because he took to the stage in the afternoon to the sound of whale noises being played out on the speakers.

He told the audience the sea creature noises were from Blue Planet 2: ‘There was one sequence that everyone seems to remember, that showed what plastic has done to the creatures in the ocean. It has an extraordinary effect.’

The presenter then announced his new TV series Seven Worlds, One Planet, which he revealed will arrive ‘later this year’.

Stormzy, in particular, was branded as ‘a gift from God’ by Wiley after making history as the first Black British solo artist to headline Glastonbury on the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm.

Leading the praise was singer Adele, who wrote a heartfelt Instagram post that it was a ‘joy to watch’ him ‘unfold at lightning speed with absolute grace.’

The 25-year-old, who wore a Banksy designed Union Jack stab-proof jacket during his performance, took the time to thank friends and family in a lengthy post and went into detail about how his legendary slot at the festival came to life.

Glastonbury wraps up today (30 June) with performances from Kylie Minogue, Janelle Monae, Dave, Miley Cyrus and The Cure.
