Sir Alex Ferguson cut a figure of pure adulation as Manchester United staged a dramatic comeback against Sheffield United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team were 2-0 down with 70 minutes on the clock, after goals from John Fleck and Lys Mousset, but by the 80th they were 3-2 up after one of the most stirring 10-minute spells of Solskjaer’s reign.

Three academy graduates got themselves on the scoresheet. Brandom Williams fired in a sweet half-volley to pull one back for the otherwise miserable Red Devils, before a beautifully measured cross from Marcus Rashford gave Mason Greenwood a simple finish from close range.

Rashford then turned from creator to provider and completed the comeback.

As the ball hit the back of the net for the third goal, the camera panned to Fergie who was grinning from ear to ear.

It was a comeback reminiscent of many he oversaw during his illustrious spell as Manchester United manager. Solskjaer was involved in a fair few under the great Scot, too.

Unfortunately for the Norwegian, the turnaround was not enough to secure all three points.

Ollie McBurnie struck late on with more dreadful defending among United’s ranks, leaving them nine points adrift of the Champions League places.

Pressure will remain on Solskjaer after a lacklustre display – especially with Mauricio Pochettino out of work and hugely admired by the club’s hierarchy.
