Sir Alex Ferguson made a rare visit to Manchester United’s training ground today, amid mounting pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position at Old Trafford.

The Scot was in attendance for Sunday’s woeful 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at the Theatre of Dreams, and he could be seen shaking his head and puffing out his cheeks in the stands during the second half.

United’s board held crisis talks on Monday to discuss Solskjaer’s position and Ferguson attended the meetings virtually from his Cheshire home.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Ferguson was at the club’s training ground today alongside ex-chairman Martin Edwards as the pressure builds on Solskjaer.

The board gave consideration to sacking Solskjaer on Monday but he’s been given a stay of execution, with the board divided over who to appoint as his successor.

Antonio Conte has the backing of some members, who feel his tactical nous is perfect to turn the club around after a dismal start to the season.

However, some fear the Italian is too fractious and his philosophy does not marry well with the ‘cultural reboot’ that Solskjaer has undertaken in the last three years.

Mauricio Pochettino is another contender but the Argentine has a contract at Paris Saint-Germain and it will be difficult – and expensive – to extract him from it.

Ferguson is said to still back Solskjaer but he remains one of the Norwegian’s only defendants at board level.

United face Tottenham in north London on Saturday before a trip to Atalanta.

They then face champions Manchester City at Old Trafford before the international break.
