Sinn Fein threaten Boris Johnson with Irish reunification referendum if he pushes ahead with No Deal Brexit

BORIS JOHNSON was yesterday warned he faces an immediate Irish referendum if he pushes ahead with a “Crash Brexit”.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald launched a savage attack on the “complacent” PM after talks in Belfast yesterday.

And she warned a No Deal would wreck the peace process and justify a new border poll – a reunification referendum.

She separately urged him to stop “mollycoddling” the DUP and accused him of being the Ulster unionists’ “gopher”.

Speaking after their meeting, Ms McDonald stormed: “It’s quite clear he has set the compass to a crash Brexit.

“We have set out very clearly that a crash Brexit would be catastrophic for the Irish economy, for Irish livelihoods, for our society and our politics and our for our peace accord.

“We have made it clear to him that the extensive planning he tells us he is carrying out has to include the constitutional question and the issue of a border poll here in Ireland.

“We have stated to him very clearly that Brexit in any event but certainly a disorderly Brexit represents a dramatic change in circumstances on this island.

“And it would be unthinkable in those circumstances that people not be given the op to decide on our future together.”

Just last year Ms McDonald was mocked by the DUP for saying she would prefer NOT to hold a border poll in the context of a “crash Brexit”.

She then said a campaign for reunification had to take place in “an atmosphere of calm”.

A poll last October suggested support for staying in the UK in Northern Ireland had fallen to around 50 per cent.

The last Northern Ireland border referendum in 1973 produced a 57 per cent majority in favour of remaining in the UK.
