Single dad who fostered a teen takes in another child who had nowhere to go in the pandemic

You might remember Peter Mutabazi, who fostered a 13-year-old child after spending a weekend with him.

Peter, 37, previously told Metro.co.uk how he survived his own abusive past and fled his village near the border of Uganda and Rwanda to settle in Oklahoma in the US.

After doing well for himself, Peter realised he wanted to offer the extra space he had at home to children who needed it.

The kind-hearted foster dad has cared for 12 children, ranging from two to 11 years old.

Earlier this year he formally adopted Anthony, who was abandoned by his family at two years old.

But Peter’s kindness doesn’t stop there.

While the world stopped to curb the spread of coronavirus, vulnerable foster children were left without a home.

Knowing this, Peter opened up his home once again to take in another child who was abandoned.

Peter and Anthony have spent the last four weeks at home with the seven-year-old – whose details they can’t share – and have had to adjust their lives to welcome the youngster.

‘I got the call and I could not say no to helping a kid in need,’ Peter tells Metro.co.uk.

While the US – one of the worst affected countries in the global pandemic – attempts to contain the virus, Peter and his family have been staying indoors getting to know one another.

Peter and Anthony have had to get creative to entertain their new family member as the dad and teen don’t have any toys he can play with.

Lockdown has been a struggle for Peter, who is homeschooling both children.

He tells us: ‘It’s been the hard, especially with school!

‘I had no idea grade one maths was that hard… or maybe times have changed.’

‘While the endless clean-up is not my idea of fun, the opportunity for family time, conversation, laughs, and lessons around the dishwasher are welcome!’ (Picture: Peter Mutabazi)

The latest addition to the family has been quickly settling in and Anthony is also glad to have a younger sibling.

‘He is adjusting well and my oldest, Anthony, seems happy to have someone he can boss around.’

Despite being an experienced foster dad, Peter is limited the things he can do with the little boy.

He says: ‘Another challenge is that it’s been hard to not have all my foster village community be there for us during the quarantine.

‘It’s really hard finding a little of me time but trying to be positive and using my bathroom as a little area for my quiet time.

‘We’re trying bike-riding so I can run alongside them which helps me get a little exercise.’

Peter shares his journey on his Instagram, where he lives by the motto ‘families don’t have to match’.
