Simon Cowell and Ant McPartlin were reduced to tears on Britain’s Got Talent by a police dog who was previously left battling for his life after being stabbed.

Policeman Dave, 42, from Buntingford, appeared on the show with his dog Finn, who has been his partner in the force for seven years.

His act begins using judge David Walliams, who is asked to show Finn a word written down to Finn without Dave looking.

Finn then returns to Dave and stares at him for a prolonged period, before he correctly guesses the word ‘Table’ written on Walliams’ board.

The dog isn’t just a performing whizz, however, with the act then delving into how Finn battled for his life after protecting Dave from an offender who tried to stab him.

Finn jumped in and saved Dave’s life from the attacker, with the clip reading: ‘Seeing my friend on the brink of death broke my heart.’

The dog was saved by vets, with the story striking a particularly emotional chord with Simon Cowell and show host Ant McPartlin, who were both looking teary.

Simon is called up on stage by David, with the judge asked to open a notepad on a random word which best describes Finn.

After landing on ‘heroic’, Dave reveals Finn’s collar has been branded with the same word.

Speaking about the act afterwards, Simon said: ‘That was pretty incredible. That’s never happened on any show.

‘A dog will literally give up his life for you. For anyone who has been cruel to an animal or a dog, just remember if you had treated him well, they would have put their lives up ahead of you.’

You can catch Britain’s Got Talent on ITV Saturday at 8pm.
