Silent Hill remake still happening insist insiders, despite Konami denial

The rumours of a Silent Hill remake developed by Sony as a PS5 exclusive will not die, despite Konami saying they’re not true.

It wasn’t the news fans wanted to hear, but last month Konami seemed to put an end to what had previously seemed to be very believable rumours, about a remake of the original Silent Hill being developed by Sony and most of the original team.

But a PR rep from Konami US shot down the rumours, stating categorically that ‘they are not true’. That seemed unambiguous enough to instantly kill the rumours, but what does not live may never die and now a new source is claiming that the remake is real after all.

The rumours returned thanks to a poster called KatharsisT on forum ResetEra – which is frequented by many industry figures – and who claimed that the remake will be announced ‘in the next few months’.

According to them original director Keiichiro Toyama (who only ever worked on the first game in the series) is involved, along with creature designer Masahiro Ito, and composer Akira Yamaoka.

The rumour is essentially the same as the original one, including the fact that Sony are developing the remake and that it will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive – which is the only way it could really work given Toyama is still employed at Sony’s Japan Studio.

Although KatharsisT refused to share their sources publicly they privately convinced moderators on the forum that the information was accurate – as members are not allowed to post unsubstantiated rumours.

There was no mention of the second part of the original rumour, that Hideo Kojima is working on a different Silent Hill game, although in recent days he has still been talking about his desire to make a horror game.

Independently from the forum post, serial leaker AestheticGamer has also insisted that the remake rumours are still true, while denying earlier talk that Sony is attempting to acquire multiple Konami franchises, including Castlevania and Metal Gear.

Horror site Rely on Horror, which also helped to spread the initial rumour, has always stated that they believe it to be true – even after Konami’s statement.

The only glint of hope during the initial denial was that it was Konami US that was making the statement, not anyone in Japan who would be closer to the potential development.

Whether that combined with this new version of the rumour is enough to give fans hope probably depends on how much you want it to be true, but while most rumours like this collapse as soon as there’s an official announcement that hasn’t happened this time.

If the rumours are true then you’d expect to maybe see an announcement whenever the PlayStation 5’s games line-up is revealed, presumably some time in the next few months.

Although the biggest knock against the rumours, even more so than the denial by Konami US, is simply that Silent Hill has never been that big a franchise and you wouldn’t have thought Sony would go to all this trouble to acquire it as an exclusive.

But if they are then we’re sure fans are not going to complain, especially after the roller-coaster ride that these rumours have been.
