Sikh MP shocks House of Commons by confronting Boris Johnson for comparing women in burkas to letterboxes

A SIKH MP demanded Boris Johnson apologise for comparing women in burkas to letterboxes in an astonishing Commons showdown yesterday.

Labour MP Singh Dhesi ambushed the new Prime Minister over his “derogatory and racist remarks” made in a newspaper column last year.

The astonishing confrontation, which came in Boris’ first ever PMQs, shocked the Commons.

And in a rare move, MPs on the Opposition benches erupted into a round of applause for Mr Dhesi – the first turban-wearing Sikh in the Commons.

Shaking with rage, Mr Dhesi said:“For those of us who have had to endure and face up to being called names such as ‘towel head’ or ‘Taliban’ or ‘coming from Bongo Bongo Land’ we can appreciate full well the hurt and pain felt by already vulnerable Muslim women when they are described as bank robbers and letter boxes.

“The Prime Minister must apologise now for his derogatory and racist remarks which have led to a spike in hate crimes.”

The PM hit back, insisting he defends the rights of people to wear what they want.

And he took a swipe at Labour’s anti-Semitism scandal, which has seen the party be formally investigated over claims it is institutionally racist.

Mr Johnson said: “I’m also proud to say that under this Government we have the most diverse Cabinet in history of this country and we truly reflect modern Britain.

“And what we have yet to hear from anywhere in the Labour Party is any hint of apology for the virus of anti-Semitism that is now rampant in their ranks.”

Jess Phillips says ‘I have absolutely no faith in anything Boris Johnson says’ in an emotionally charged attack at the PM
