Sian Clifford has thanked Phoebe Waller-Bridge for championing her throughout her career – as she beat the Fleabag creator to a Bafta award.

The pair were both in the running for the award for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme at the Virgin Media Bafta Television Awards for their roles as Claire and Fleabag.

Sian was left emotional as she scooped the award over Phoebe, admitting there would ‘be no Claire without Fleabag’.

After accepting her award she revealed that she and Phoebe had reunited after the win, explaining: ‘There was sound feedback so we broke into our friend’s house down the road.

‘We reunited after I won and she gave me the godmother statue, we both have one.’

The godmother statue is the naked torso of Fleabag and Claire’s late mother which is sculpted by their godmother, who is also in a relationship with their dad, and which features prominently in the show.

Sian and Phoebe have been friends for almost 20 years, and she praised her pal for always championing her throughout her career.

She added: ‘There is so much history with this show, with my friendship with Phoebe.

‘We have just championed each other since that day and I just feel so lucky to have found her and have somebody who believes in me more than I believe in myself.’

Other nominees in the category included Gbemisola Ikumelo from Famalam and Sarah Kendall from Frayed.

Sian accepted her award via video call after this year’s Baftas ceremony had to be adapted due to the coronavirus pandemic

Originally due to take place on May 17, it was pushed back to July 31 due to lockdown and social distancing rules.

Host Richard Ayoade presented to an empty studio while the winners called in from home to accept their awards.
