Sian Clifford cries after winning TV Bafta as Phoebe Waller-Bridge gives her a ‘Godmother’ statue

Sian Clifford teared up at the news that she had won a Bafta.

The 38-year-old became overwhelmed when comedian Greg Davies announced she had been chosen to win the hallowed Virgin Media Bafta TV Award for playing Claire in hit black comedy Fleabag.

The actor had been nominated alongside her Fleabag co-star and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the award of best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme, with Clifford seeing stunned she had pipped her friend to the post.

Welling up after her name had been announced, Clifford said: “Oh my God!

She added: “I honestly don’t know what to say,” and said to her fellow nominees: “We’re all winners here.

“I don’t even believe in competition and all the women I’ve been recognised with, including the one I wouldn’t even be here without.

“This is unbelievable! Thank you to everyone involved – there is no Claire without Fleabag. This is so weird and surreal and I hope you’re all celebrating today!”

Later in the evening, Clifford added that she had been celebrating with Waller-Bridge after the awards were announced – with the esteemed writer giving her a very special, if not familiar trophy.

“We reunited after I won and she gave me godmother statue, we both have one.” Clifford told press.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge previously won the accolade in 2017 ()

She added: “There is so much history with this show, with my friendship with Phoebe. We have just championed each other since that day and I just feel so lucky to have found her and have somebody who believes in me more than I believe in myself.”

As well as Waller-Bridge and Clifford, Sarah Kendall was nominated for her role in Frayed while Gbemisola Ikumelo received a nod for Famalam.

Before the winner was announced, the nominees couldn’t help but poke fun at the Zoom conference set-up, all pretending to pluck a stray hair from their chins while on camera.

Waller-Bridge previously won a Bafta in the same category in 2017 for Fleabag, and has previously swept awards ceremonies across the globe due to the success of her hit comedy.

Fleabag was also nominated for Best Scripted Comedy, but lost out to Stath Lets Flats, which is stars former Fleabag actor Jamie Demetriou.
