Shrewsbury 2-2 Liverpool: Cummings double secures FA Cup comeback draw and Anfield replay

Jason Cummings was the hero as Shrewsbury came from 2-0 down to draw with Liverpool and secure an FA Cup fourth round replay at Anfield. The League One side found themselves behind but mounted an incredible comeback in the second half.

Liverpool took the lead through Curtis Jones and went in at the break with a slender advantage.

An unfortunate Donald Love own goal immediately as the second half kicked off made it 2-0 to Liverpool who were seemingly on their way into the fifth round.

But Cummings had other ideas when he came off the bench on the hour mark.

He scored a penalty in the 65th minute to give the home fans hope of securing a memorable draw and and Anfield replay.

Cummings would send the supporters into a frenzy as he equalised in the 75th minute and they could have even ended up winning the game as Josh Laurent came close.

Man of the match Laurent was delighted with the result.

He said: “Unbelievable. We always believed, it showed our character, before the game we believed we could win it, let alone pick up a draw. I think that showed in the second half, we always believed.

“I saw Jason [Cummings] creeping, I thought it’s the cup, so why not. It’s what dreams are made of.

“I didn’t think our chance had gone after the own goal. We’ve got great character, the pressure was on them not us. We’ve got great belief. At half-time the gaffer just told us to believe and said we’d get chances and that’s what happened.

“I can’t wait for the replay, it something that everyone dreams of.”

Cummings himself felt he could have had a hat-trick in the match.

He exclaimed: “I could have got a hat-trick! It was a dream come true against the best team in the world. Going to Anfield is what it’s all about.

“Anfield will be really good, for the fans, for the chairman making a few quid. We can’t wait to get there.”

Shrewsbury and Liverpool will be in the FA Cup fifth round draw hat tomorrow night on the One Show from 7pm.
