Should Man Utd sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Mauricio Pochettino available? – Big Debate

Manchester United have struggled so far this season leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under pressure at Old Trafford. Some fans and pundits have called for the Norweigian to be sacked with Mauricio Pochettino now available following his Tottenham exit. Express Sport writers have had their say on the matter in the latest Big Debate.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was always a hold the fort manager for Manchester United and should never have been appointed permanently.

The club have indulged themselves on a sentimental stroll to nowhere for many months now. The delusion at United is incredible.

Of course they should change their manager and bring in a new man with vision, authority, a powerful presence and clear football philosophy.

Mauricio Pochettino would be the perfect fit after his outstanding work at Tottenham. It’s an open goal for the United power-brokers to snap him up. Can they remember how to shoot straight?

Personally I don’t think United should sack Solskjaer. The problems at the club on the field and off it are more deep rooted than simply changing the manager and hoping for an instant boost.

The word is anyway that United will not sack the Norwegian, even if he misses out on a top four place, which looks highly likely at the moment.

Solskjaer is bringing young players into this United team, like Brandon Williams, Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay. It will need time to forge what is clearly a developing new team.

The indications are that the United board are set to back Solskjaer in this project, at least unless things go badly wrong.

Things were different with Pochettino at Tottenham. He had had five years at Spurs, and it looked like that particular scheme had run out of steam.

With Emery at Arsenal the players seemed to have lost faith in their manager. That does not seem to have happened yet at Old Trafford.

Manchester United must stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even with Mauricio Pochettino available.

The Red Devils are down in 10th in the Premier League but can you really say with the players the Norwegian has at his disposal and the injuries he has suffered that they have underperformed?

The answer is no and Solskjaer deserves at least the remainder of the season to prove his worth.

He got his summer transfer business right and if he can do the same in January, United could be the surprise package in the second half of the season.

They aren’t that far off the top four and it would make little sense to change manager right now.

United also have Paul Pogba to come back into the fold which could make a massive difference and turn some of the draws they have suffered into wins.

Giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a couple of transfer windows will only delay the inevitable – the Norwegian must go.

Solskjaer had no proven pedigree before he took over the hottest at Old Trafford, his only previous experience in the Englsh top flight coming as he took Cardiff down to the Championship by finishing rock bottom in 2014.

With a manager like Mauricio Pochettino waiting in the sidelines there is no doubt Ed Woodward must move swiftly.

But if the Red Devils cannot strike a deal with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy for Argentine and stability is really the only target then surely Sam Allardyce has to be in the reckoning.

He finished three points outside of the Champions League places with Bolton in 2005 and knows how to get the best out of his resources.

The only reason Manchester United should sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is because Mauricio Pochettino is available.

The Argentine seems like he would be a perfect fit at Old Trafford and Ed Woodward should move fast to secure his appointment.

Had the former Tottenham boss still been in a job then United would have had little option but to stick with Solskjaer for now.

Woodward may even keep the Norwegian on the United staff after all that he promised when first taking over the job.

Pochettino as manager with Solskjaer as a director of football? Now that would please the Red Devils faithful.

Ryan Taylor

Ed Woodward has continually and publicly stuck by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and therefore has to stick to his plan. United have decided that this long-term blueprint is the road they want to walk and therefore have to show patience.

The obvious issue for United, is that Pochettino is undeniably an upgrade. Before they had the problems of trying to untangle his commitment to Tottenham, yet now he is seemingly ready and waiting in the wings for the opportunity to take charge at Old Trafford.

In truth, United would be foolish not to give Poch the job, but unfortunately, they have put themselves in the mire by appointing Solskjaer permanently in the first place.

It was a spur of the moment decision, which should have been held off until the end of the season. The whole saga really does truly depict the poor leadership from above at boardroom level, which is something that unless sorted is going to continue having serious implications on their fortunes.

If I was in charge of United, Solskjaer would be handed his P45, and Poch would be at Carrington tomorrow. It’s a no brainer.

I’m a bit confused as to how Solskjaer is still in a job, to be honest. As a Man City fan, I’d rather he stayed in charge at United – and that just about says it all.

He’s spent a significant amount of money this summer after a dire end to last season. He promised to get rid of the deadwood at Old Trafford, and only showed the exit door to Romelu Lukaku.

Chris Smalling and Alexis Sanchez are only away on loan, meaning they could come back. Phil Jones and Ashley Young are still there, and I’m not sure why.

They’ve also seen a drastic fall from grace, with some questionable decision-making from the manager. Tottenham have already reaped the benefits of replacing their manager, and with United in ninth place, it’s time they did too.

Pochettino isn’t going to be around forever. Even if he had a clause in his contract at Spurs where he’d have to pay £12m to sign for a new Premier League team this season, that’s nothing compared to United’s recent spending. Just do it.
