Shock results needed for a first ever Premier League title playoff

The Premier League title could be decided by a historic play-off, should both Manchester City and Liverpool slip up in their final game and an extraordinary sequence of events take place.

The last day of the season will see the champions crowned after an intense battle all season, with Manchester City looking likely to become the first side to retain the title since rivals Manchester United in 2009.

Vincent Kompany’s incredible long-range winner on Monday for City against Leicester means the Citizens have a one-point lead heading into the final day, in what has been a historic season.

Both sides already have enough points to win every single Premier League season other than 2017/18 and 2004/05, when Jose Mourinho led Chelsea to 95 points.

Kompany’s wonderstrike left City in pole position

There is one scenario which could see a play-off take place to decide the champions, but it would require the most unlikely of events to unravel.

Manchester City would need to lose 4-0 at 17th place Brighton , whilst Liverpool would need to draw 4-4 at home to Wolves , who have finished the season seventh.

The required results would leave both sides on 91 goals scored, 26 goals against, +65 goal difference and 95 points.

Liverpool’s late winner against Newcastle kept them in the title race

Should the unbelievable happen, the play-off would be held at a neutral venue and would certainly be the most anticipated moment of the Premier League’s illustrious history.

Pep Guardiola’s City side are on course for a domestic treble this season, having beaten Chelsea on penalties in February to win the League Cup whilst they have Watford left to play in the FA Cup final.

Jurgen Klopp, on the other hand, has led his Liverpool side to back-to-back Champions League finals, and will hope this year to be victorious in order to erase the memories of last season’s gut wrenching final defeat to Real Madrid .
