Alan Smith slammed Shkodran Mustafi after his shocking own goal during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool.

Unbeaten Premier League leaders Liverpool took an early lead over the Gunners on Wednesday night courtesy of an embarrassing own goal from German defender Mustafi.

Attempting to clear an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross, Mustafi only managed to prod the ball past Emiliano Martinez and into his own net.

Commentating for Sky Sports, Gunners hero Smith said: ‘It’s classic Mustafi. Going to ground when he doesn’t have to. He can stay on his feet there.

‘It’s a car crash for the defender. What a gift for Liverpool.

‘It will be difficult for Mustafi to get that out of his mind. It’s just poor decision-making.’
