Shirley Ballas opens up about ‘painful’ return to Strictly Come Dancing just days after breast surgery

Shirley Ballas has said it was “painful” returning to Strictly Come Dancing just days after having her breast implants taken out.

The head judge for the show, 59, said how the decision to remove them “was not made lightly” and if she had a chance to go back she would not have them fitted.

Speaking on Lorraine on Monday morning, she told the host: “It is [painful] and it was for the show and I chose to take minimal painkillers. Every day it will get better. About 6 to 8 weeks recuperation. I won’t [miss a show].”

She added: “I had them done 17 years ago… [if I could] go back, I would never have done it. I did not do enough research… really do study the whole procedure. It is not how it seems to be.

“I do feel more like myself. I’m still getting used to it – all the clothes are a little bit different now. It was a DD, now it’s an A/B, it’s quite a difference in bust size. Before they were heavy, they were weighted, there was cancer in my family, I was concerned about that.”

This weekend marked a controversial moment between Ballas and Strictly pro Anton Du Beke after he hit back at criticism she made about his dance with Emma Barton.

The duo performed a rumba to Woman In Love, which Ballas described Barton as “tall” and “elegant” before adding “You have everything that it takes to do a beautiful rumba.”

Du Beke then cut her off, telling Ballas: “There’s no need for you to say any more – you’re welcome to say nothing else.”

But she added that Barton did not keep in time with the music, to which Du Beke said: “Sometimes there are four steps and there are three beats, sometimes there are five steps. Sometimes there are seven beats, sometimes there are no steps!”

Despite Ballas’ comments, Du Beke and Barton escaped the dance off.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One on November 9 at 6.45pm.
