Shenmue 3 review embargo: Bad news for fans ahead of release date

Shenmue fans waiting to hear more about the game before its official release date this week have been given bad news.

The single-player action game has a November 19 release date on PS4 and PC and is a project that fans have waited a long time to play.

And while it’s great news that Shenmue 3 has been made against all the odds, fans are still curious about the returning franchise.

How does the gameplay fit with the older titles? And will the merging of old and new really work when it comes to the Shenmue series?

Previews for the game are available to read now, but new reports suggest that Shenmue 3 reviews won’t go live until launch.

And it appears that some regions may even see review embargos until November 21, days after the game is available to buy.

This apparently isn’t the same in the US, with Shenmue 3 reviews expected to go live on November 19.

It’s a massive change in format and is a decision that has fans talking online on why such a move would have been made.

“In all fairness, Bloodstained and Doom 2016 had embargoes that lasted past release date, and both those games turned out really well,” one Shenmue fan writes.

“So it’s not necessarily “late review embargo=bad game,” though that’s still a possibility.

“Fallen Order also had an embargo until launch day, and it turned out well, so there’s that.

“Doesn’t mean that Shenmue 3 will be the same, but I don’t think it’s fair to jump to conclusions just yet.”

This will mean that there will be a lot of user scores going online for Shenmue 3 before the critics have their say.

Shenmue 3 will continue the story of Ryo Hazuki, a teenage martial artist, determined to unravel the mystery behind his father’s murder and to exact revenge on the killer.

This will follow on from Shenmue 2, which was released back in 2001 on Dreamcast. Shenmue 3 was initially revealed during a PlayStation E3 event in LA.

This happened back in 2015, and it’s taken some time for the game to arrive on PS4 and PC finally.

The game has its own Kickstarter page and has seen other major changes along the way, including a switch to becoming an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC.

A recent message from series creator Yu Suzuki thanked fans for their support over the years and before its final release.

“Hello Everyone, November 19th is finally upon us,” the Shenmue 3 message reads.

“So today, our happy, game-creating uncle, Yu Suzuki, would like to give a special thank you message.

“For us, it has been an incredibly short four years, for everyone waiting for the day it has been an incredibly long four year, but here we are!

“We honestly cannot thank you enough for all the support you have given through thick and thin.

“We hope you will be there with us as the journey goes on! From all of us at the Shenmue III project team.”
