Shawn Mendes has apologised online for his past ‘offensive’ comments after he faced backlash from unimpressed fans after he suggested everyone ‘moves on.’

The Senorita singer, who’s currently dating Camila Cabello, wrote: ‘I posted some racially insensitive comments on social media when I was younger, and I am so sorry.

‘I apologize wholeheartedly for what was said & understand how offensive those posts were.’

The 21-year-old added: ‘There is no place for comments like that, and those words do not represent who I am. I stand for complete inclusivity, equality, & love.’

Shawn’s new apology comes after fans were unimpressed with how he addressed the posts when asked about them at a meet-and-greet.

When an audience member asked why he had never acknowledged the ‘ignorant’ tweets, Shawn replied: ‘Yeah, of course. A lot of things just need to be moved on from.

‘But I also think that the things that [you] saw, like I had friends when I was 14 who would like take my phone and post things of them because they thought it was funny that I had like 2,000 followers and it was this big thing.

‘And they’d post photos of themselves and at the time I was just like not thinking about it. I had no idea I was going to have 50 million followers, which doesn’t make it any better.’

Shawn added: ‘But um, yeah totally I apologise for everything insensitive I said in the past, but with that being said, yeah, I think that’s not my personality.’

Fans were quick to pick up on the fact he started his apology by telling people to ‘move on’ before blaming the posts on someone else, and it’s safe to say they weren’t very impressed.

The messages in question were posted in 2013 when the singer was 14 years old, and included him describing his hair as an ‘afro’ and calling his friend ‘mah n***a’ but have since been deleted from his account.

Earlier this month, Shawn revealed he deleted social media apps from his phone.

When asked about social media at a pre-concert Q&A in Atlanta, Shawn said: ‘I struggle with social media a lot.’

He continued: ‘To be honest with you guys, I deleted Instagram and Twitter three days ago, but I send my manager pictures and I’m like, “Can you post this?”
