Shave a slice off your food bill with our top tips for cheap cheese deals

WE can’t seem to get enough of cheese at the moment, with sales soaring.

But it is not the cheapest item to pop into the shopping trolley. Cheddar costs £5.41 per kilo on average.

So here is how to shave a slice off your food bill . . .

OUT FOR THE COUNT: It is often cheaper to buy a block of cheese from the counter rather than the shop floor, as they have good deals.

Also, look out for the large blocks sold in Iceland. I picked up a 3kg block of Cathedral City mature cheddar cheese for £20.

To get that amount in Sainsbury’s, I would have needed to buy six 550g packs — spending a total of £29.05, as each pack costs £4.50.

FREEZE ‘N’ EASY: If you bulk-buy your cheese, you can freeze it to save cash.

With my big block, I grate it into freezer bags then pop them into the freezer until I finish the previous bag. This way it lasts me an entire month.

A 40-pack of Slide Zip Food & Freezer bags is £1, down from £1.99 at B&M.

STRONGER IS BETTER: Another trick is to buy more mature or stronger cheese. You end up using less, as a small amount is enough to tickle your taste buds.

I like Pilgrims Choice extra- mature cheddar. It costs £3.50 for 300g at Asda but at Tesco you can get it for £2.39.

SAVE: £1.11

CHEAP CHEDDAR: At Tesco you can get two packs of selected cheese for £3.

The variety is huge. You could go for Edam slices, £1.70, and grated mozzarella, also £1.70, saving 40p.

Prefer cheddar? Head over to Morrisons before Sunday to grab a pack of Cathedral City’s mature cheddar for £2.50, down from £3.50.

SAVE: £1 at Morrisons

SUPERMARKET SWEEPS: Instead of paying £2.30 for a block of Tesco’s “30 per cent less fat” mature cheese, buy Aldi’s mature lighter cheese for £1.79. I can’t taste the difference.

I also recommend Morrisons’ Greek feta. It is on offer for 95p and slightly cheaper than Asda’s feta at £1.05.
