Shaun Wright-Phillips has criticised Kurt Zouma for getting ‘bullied’ during Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

Frank Lampard’s side found themselves three goals down in the first half as Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne gave City a commanding lead.

After a woeful opening 45 minutes, Chelsea showed signs of improvement in the second half and scored a late consolation through Callum Hudson-Odoi.

But Wright-Phillips admits he was ‘shocked’ by Chelsea’s ‘lack of fight’ and has highlighted a point in the first half where Zouma was pushed off the ball by Foden as an example of the poor mentality shown by Lampard’s players.

‘For me it’s a very difficult spell,’ Wright-Phillips, who won the Premier League and FA Cup during his time at Chelsea, told Premier League Productions.

‘The one thing that shocked me watching the game was the lack of fight.

‘They gave Man City way too much time on the ball. If you give quality players time like that, regardless of who they are, they will punish you for it.

‘If they have the fight I think the rest comes with it because they’ve clearly got the ability.

‘For me, you can’t allow people like Kevin De Bruyne, [Ilkay] Gundogan, [Phil] Foden, whoever it may be in that Man City team, time around your box. You have to get close to them, you have to be aggressive.

‘Anyone can hurt you when there’s no pressure on the ball and you’re leaving world-class elite players that sort of time. They will just make you run all day. They weren’t compact enough, some of the passing that went through.

‘There was a situation with Kurt Zouma in the midfield where somehow Phil Foden has managed to bully Kurt Zouma. If I’m a big, strong centre-back, I would refuse to allow that to happen.

‘For me that’s just an example of the lack of fight.’
