Shaquille O’Neal trying to cram his 7ft 1in self into a tiny Smart Car is actually ridiculous

Even if you’re not a basketball fan, you’ll probably know that Shaquille O’Neal is famously a very tall man… so watching him squeeze himself into a Smart Car is actually quite a feat in contortionism.

The NBA star comes in at a massive 7ft 1in (2.16m) tall, so quite why he thought to get himself a Smart car, we can’t really work out.

Shaq, 47, was seen trying to manoeuvre himself into the miniscule vehicle in New York, but it ended up looking a bit like a clown car as he tried to fit himself into it.

The former LA Lakers and Miami Heat star was trying to make a quiet exit from an event he had been attending in the city, but only ended up drawing more attention to himself as he clambered into the car and pretty much rested his chin on his knees while driving the miniscule thing.

It’s more common to see basketball players driving enormous cars like the celeb favourite Mercedes G-Wagon, so it’s safe to say nobody was expecting to see a millionaire giant driving a car smaller than a FILA trainer.

New York-based street journalist Adam Glyn shared footage of the moment on his Instagram story, where he can be heard asking: ‘No way. That’s your car? Dude, no way. Are you kidding me? That’s the car he gets in New York City? That’s insane.’

Well, it does make for easy parking in a crowded city, we suppose…

As well as making frugal choices with his car, Shaq has also made some wise investments throughout his career – including being an early investor in Google – but admitted he made some catastrophic decisions in the beginning.

He told CNBC’s Power Lunch: ‘I lost a lot of money in the get-rich-quick schemes. If someone said, “give me a million and in three years, it’ll be $10 million” — deals like that, I would take every time. No research, no due diligence.

‘I learned early that when I stopped thinking about the payouts, I’ll always be successful.’
