Sex Education season 2: Maeve Wiley's new role revealed in huge shake-up for Netflix show?

Maeve (played by Emma MacKey) was central to the first season of Sex Education, devising an unconventional business partnership with fellow high schooler Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) when the pair saw a niche in the market to help teenagers with their intimate woes. The show’s success prompted the call for a second outing, which will arrive on Netflix next week, with all the fan favourites returning to the fold. However, viewers may notice a difference this time around as bosses have teased how the female characters of the series will take centre stage in particular. So, will Maeve undertake a new role as part of the storyline?

In the series’ first season, the rebellious teenager fought for a stand on feminism as the promiscuous boys of the school believed they held dominance.

From the outset, it was clear the character of Maeve was well educated about the world and held differing opinions to many of her classmates.

She often held her own, especially when speaking with Otis, but could she take further action to make her stand on matters clear in the new outing?

Ahead of the programme returning next week, Executive Producer Jamie Campbell teased what differences viewers can expect to see unfold and they might include the show’s female protagonist in a new role.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the Sex Education boss said: “We double down on the female characters I think in season two.

“There are some amazing moments, particularly in the second half of the season that focuses on female empowerment and female solidarity.”

Hinting at the big shake-up, Jamie added: “And I think it’s unlike I’ve ever seen young women depicted on TV.

“I think it’s really special and extraordinary.”

Could this have fuelled the fire to begin an uprising against the males of the school if the female protagonist does take on such a role?

Maeve star Emma, 24, recently spoke about delving deeper into her character’s background and ethos in an interview with Stylist.

The actress said of season two: “There was a real nervous buzz, we were all wondering if the quality would be as good, if we could keep up the excitement of season one.

“But I was more confident and it definitely felt like the writers had incorporated me into the character a bit more, it felt really familiar.”

Teasing her own changes to the rebellious character, Emma explained: “This time around we find out so much more about Maeve.

“It gets quite dark but there was so much to get my teeth into.”

Netflix released a new trailer for the show this week, which shows Maeve don her light-pink highlighted hair for a dark brunette colour.

Could these all be teasers the high schooler is undertaking a drastic new role?

Sex Education season two is available to stream from January 17 on Netflix. Season one is now available for catch-up.
