WAS that the most fun weekend we’ve had for ages?
With the warm weather, footie to watch and pubs open, normality felt closer — but our wallets have been taking a beating.
Consumer spending rose by 7.6 per cent in May compared with the same period in 2019 — the highest growth since Covid restrictions began.
If you are one of those going over budget, here is how to regain control . . .
TAKE STOCK: Check your bank statement today. First, look for double charges that might have been made in error (this often happens during big weekend spending) and write down what you have spent in categories — food, drink, transport and so on — to work out where it all went.
BUDGET MONTHLY: Plan your spending for a month. I use a spreadsheet but moneyadviceservice.org.uk has a great budget planner you can try.
Where could you trim costs for the rest of the month? Having one less coffee a week and one less takeaway would recoup some of that blowout.
When planning your next night out, have that first drink at home instead. Use the bargains on this page to save.
MEAL PLAN: A lot of our money goes on the regular food shop but planning each meal will help your cash go further. Check out Sun columnist The Batch Lady for tips on YouTube. I also like the Feeding Your Family For £1 Per Day Facebook group. For deals on new treats, go to facebook.com/thesunsavers.
GET SELLING: If you need a quick cash boost, see if you have something in the cupboard or loft you can pop on eBay, Depop or Vinted. Get old gadgets valued at compareandrecycle.co.uk. (It’s not just phones.)
You could join a market research company and take part in paid focus groups. Look on facebook.com/angelfishopinions for groups.
DROP THE GUILT: All of us overspend from time to time, especially after the year we have had. The key is to figure out where to trim the budget for the rest of the month — you’ll be just fine.
