Sergio Romero lifts lid on frustrations of being Man Utd's second-choice keeper

Manchester United’s backup goalkeeper Sergio Romero says he wants to stay at the club despite finding his first-team opportunities limited since he joined in 2015.

Romero has been second choice to David De Gea ever since he arrived, and the vast majority of his 49 appearances for the Red Devils have come in cup competitions.

Nevertheless, the 32-year-old insists he still feels lucky to be at the club, and says it is a privilege to play for one of the biggest teams in the world.

Speaking ahead of United’s game against his former club AZ Alkmaar, Romero said: “It’s not easy, but I work every day for this, for this possibility.

Romero has had to settle for a spot on the bench for the majority of his Manchester United career

“When I have my chance in the squad to play, I am ready for this moment. I think in the last four years I have been in a difficult situation because I have played for the national team for years.

“But I am ready, I work every day for my chance and when I have my chance I try to do my best.”

Romero accepts that it will always be difficult to dislodge De Gea from the number one spot, but believes the honour of wearing the United shirt when he gets the chance makes up for it.

He added: “When you have David in front (of you)- in the last years David is the best goalkeeper in the world- this is difficult.

“But I work, I am happy, I am in the best club in the world. I tell about another time when I was young, I saw Man Utd play many times and I say ‘one day I want to play in this club.’

“When I got the chance to come to United I knew if I accepted that I would be playing a few games, but when you get the chance to wear this shirt it’s a dream come true. It’s never intention to be second choice.”
