Sergio Busquets gave a tearful apology to Barcelona supporters whilst Liverpool’s players celebrated their stunning Champions League comeback on the pitch at Anfield.
Barcelona looked on course to reach the Champions League final after registering a 3-0 win in the first leg at Camp Nou last week.
But for the second successive season, Barca suffered another collapse in Europe as Liverpool scored four without reply to complete an amazing revival and reach the Champions League final on June 1.
But as Liverpool’s players celebrated and the club’s supporters sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in full voice, Busquets was clearly emotional as he gave his post-match interview with Spanish television.
‘They were better than us. They went after the game from the first minute,’ said Busquets.
‘We had chances to score the goal we needed but it was not to be. I can’t say anything more.’
As tears could be seen welling up in Busquets’ eyes, the midfielder added: ‘I just want to say sorry to the supporters. After Roma we didn’t want this to happen again.
If you don’t press against a team like this and you don’t take your chances then you’re in trouble. It’s hard to say anything else. We are sorry to our fans.’
