Serena Williams and Andy Murray made a winning start to their Wimbledon mixed doubles run, comprehensively seeing off Alexa Guarachi and Andreas Mies in straight sets 6-4 6-1.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner had progressed to the fourth round of the women’s singles earlier in the day, beating Julia Goerges, but Murray had crashed out of the men’s doubles alongside Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Despite only having had one practice session together, the British-American pairing had no such problems and immediately looked a great fit for one another.

Serena had revealed beforehand that her one rule for playing doubles is that she gets to play forehand side, and she dominated and dictated many of the points.

The clash lived up to its pre-match billing and was a hugely entertaining affair, with Guarachi and Mies hanging in doggedly in the first set and at one point making Williams hide for cover behind the net during yet another frenetic rally.

On break point in ninth game, the American pulled off a lovely pick-up but then slipped over as the point continued around her, prompting laughter from both the crowd and Williams – who was clearly enjoying herself enormously.

Whereas the Chilean-German combo fought hard in the first set, they were completely blown away in the second.

By this point, Murray and Williams had dialled into the same wavelength and Serena was sending some viscous shots across at their opponents, who had no answer. They broke again in the final game to seal a victory that will worry the remaining pairs in the competition.

Next up, the duo will face 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo in the second round in what is sure to be another must-watch encounter.
