Selena Gomez has signed up to star in comedy series Only Murders In The Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short.

The three will star in and executive produce the TV series, which will air on US streaming service Hulu.

Selena, Steve and Martin will play three strangers who share an obsession with true crime, before finding themselves caught up in one.

The series was co-created by Steve, 74, who enlisted his long-time friend Martin, 70, who he met while filming 1986’s Three Amigos, to star in it.

Selena, 28, is no stanger to acting, having started her career on the Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, but her recent credits – including Spring Breakers, The Big Short and Fundamentals Of Caring – have been on the big screen.

She also served as executive producer for 13 Reasons Why as well as new film The Broken Hearts Gallery

Only Murders In The Building was first announced in January at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, and is a straight-to-series order.

Hulu’s head of programming, Craig Erwich, recently told Deadline: ‘I heard the pitch on Wednesday, and it was the best hour I had all week.

‘It’s really special, surprisingly emotional. It’s really modern and self-referential about podcasts and murders, it’s got some great surprises. When they pull this off, it’s going to be really special.’

Playing on the popularity of true crime series and podcasts, Only Murders In The Building will be a fictional comedy rather than based on any real-life case.

Selena’s other venture, HBO Max cookery series Selena + Chef will also premiere on 13 August and will see world-famous chefs teach Selena how to make their signature dishes.

However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, their lessons will be taught remotely and the food will be tested by her friends and grandparents at her home instead.
