Scream 5 is an eyeing up a release date in 2021 – 25 years after the first film in the franchise was released.

Set to be directed by Ready Or Not filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett, the five-quel is being tagged as a ‘relaunch’ of the slasher series rather than a continuation of its existing narrative.

According to Variety, Scream 5 has been picked up by studio Paramount and is aiming for a 2021 release, with shooting set to begin later this summer.

The basic story of the series follows Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her group of friends, including Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) stalked by the knife-wielding, mask-wearing Ghostface.

If Scream 5 is released next year, then it would fall on a very important anniversary for the series as a whole, a whole quarter of a century since the OG Scream first dropped in 1996.

Infamously killing off Drew Barrymore, its biggest star, in the opening 10 minutes, Scream set the template for a new generation of post-modernist horror, where the characters were actively aware of the ‘rules’ of horror movies and how to avoid being killed.

Things got off to a big start with Scream and its sequel – released within a year of each other – grossing more than $100 million each at the global box office, but things slowed down to a halt with the third instalment becoming the type of horror the original had set out to parody.

The narrative got a fresher reboot in 2011 with the extremely underrated Scream 4, but it seemed that people just weren’t interested anymore, and then came the sad news of franchise director Wes Craven’s death in 2015.

Now, however, things seem to be ticking along quite nicely – with the directors of another, great buzzy slasher film attached and original series star David Arquette all signed up.

There’s still no confirmation is Campbell or Cox will be returning to their iconic roles – but you can’t have a Scream film without Sidney and Gale, right? Right??

Anyway, we’ll meet you back here in 2021 for the rules of horror to change again. We can’t wait.
