Scarlett Moffatt slams 'sexist '90s movies that present women as meat'

Scarlett Moffatt says re-watching movies from the 1990s in lockdown has left her fuming over the way women were presented in film.

The 29-year-old former Gogglebox star has been getting something of an education in ‘90s film from her current boyfriend, police officer Scott Dobinson.

But the reality TV star has been left far form impressed by the way women are depicted in film – saying she has found classic films stuffed full of sexist tropes.

Former I’m A Celeb winner Scarlett took particular issue with the 1995 action comedy Bad Boys, starring Will Smith, Martin Lawrence and Tea Téa Leoni, which she gave up on after 30 minutes of viewing.

Scarlett Moffatt has slammed ’90s films for presenting women ‘like meat’

She told The Sun: “We watched half an hour. As you get older as a woman, you realise how sexist Nineties films are.

“Within five minutes there was someone with her boobs out and a little skirt as if all we are is meat.

“I was like, ‘What is this s**t?’ ”

Bad Boys and it’s sequel Bad Boys II was directed by action flick maker Michael Bay – who has developed a notoriety over the years for sexualising his female stars.

He has been scrutinised in recent weeks over resurfaced footage of an interview by actress Megan Fox in which she said she was asked to dance in a bikini when just 15-years-old by the director.

In the 2009 clip from late night talkshow Jimmy Kimmel Live, Megan said: “I had just turned 15 and I was an extra in Bad Boys II. They were shooting this club scene and they brought me in and I was wearing a stars and stripes bikini and a red cowboy hat and six-inch heels.

Megan Fox defended Michael after a past interview she gave resurfaced

“[Bay] approved it and they said ‘Michael, she’s 15 so you can’t sit her at the bar and she can’t have a drink in her hand’, so, his solution to that problem was to then have me dancing underneath a waterfall getting soaking wet.”

She then added: “At 15, I was in 10th grade. That’s kind of a microcosm of how Bay’s mind works.”

However, the actress posted a statement on Instagram last week, writing: “I know that a discussion has erupted online surrounding some of my experiences in Hollywood and the subsequent mishandling of this information by the media and society in general.

Footage of Megan being interviewed in 2009 sparked debate this month

“While I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support, I do feel I need to clarify some of the details as they have been lost in the retelling of the events and cast a sinister shadow that doesn’t really, in my opinion, belong.

“At least not where it’s currently being projected.

“I was around 15 or 16 years old when I was an extra in Bad Boys II…. It’s important to note however that when I auditioned for Transformers I was 19 or 20.

“I did ‘work’ (me pretending to know how to hold a wrench) on one of Michael’s Ferrari’s during one of the audition scenes.

“It was at the Platinum Dunes studios parking lot, there were several other crew members and employees present and I was at no point undressed or anything similar.

“So as far as this particular audition story I was not underage at the time and I was not made to ‘wash’ or work on someone’s cars in a way that was extraneous from the material in the actual script.”
