Scarlett Johansson is ‘passing the baton’ to Black Widow co-star Florence Pugh, according to the film’s director Cate Shortland.

Which suggests big things for Florence, doesn’t it?

Speaking to Empire, Cate said ‘[Kevin Feige – MCU president] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction.

‘And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be.’

We did!

‘We knew she would be great,’ added Cate. ‘But we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, “Oh, I’m handing her the baton”.

‘So it’s going to propel another female storyline.’

We’re glad to hear it.

Black Widow is due to be released on 6 November 2020, after its planned May release was pushed back due to coronavirus.

The flick will also feature the likes of Ray Winstone and Rachel Weisz in supporting roles.

Florence’s film credits to date include critical hits like Midsommar and Lady Macbeth. She then won a 2020 best supporting actress Oscar nod for her work on Greta Gerwig’s Little Women – Scarlett was nominated in the same category for Jojo Rabbit, and in the best actress category for Marriage Story.

However both actresses went home empty-handed, with Renee Zellweger winning best actress for Judy and Laura Dern winning best supporting actress for Marriage Story.

Could Florence and/or Scarlett win nominations next year for comic book character roles? In this strange new decade, we wouldn’t bet against anything – just don’t tell Martin Scorsese.
