As the stars of an upcoming heartbreaker, Marriage Story, gathered for the Venice Film Festival, Scarlett Johansson decided to be very honest about how personal the project was.

The actress plays Nicole in the film opposite Adam Driver who plays her on-screen husband, Charlie.

Directed by Noah Baumbach, this tear-jerking film follows Nicole and Charlie as they go through a divorce and is ‘an incisive and compassionate portrait of a marriage breaking up and a family staying together’.

And now Scarlett has opened up about how personal the project felt.

Having separated from Ryan Reynolds in 2011 and Romain Dauriac in 2017, Scarlett said ‘there’s so much of all of us in this film that’s out there for everyone to see’.

Speaking at the film festival press conference, she added: ‘When I met with Noah, I was going through a divorce, and I didn’t know what we were meeting about at all. And he didn’t know I was going through a divorce.

‘I probably just blew into the room and ordered a glass of white wine and started complaining, and he was just listening and very attentive.

‘And then he kind of cut it short and said, “Funny you should mention it.”‘

Baumbach said he knew Scarlett would either really want to do the film or really really wouldn’t.

Luckily she was fully on board.

‘It felt sort of fated in a way.

‘It was an experience to share with him and have him share with me. And it somehow came at just the right time.’

Baumbach was keen to explore the concepts of both marriage and divorce in the movie.

He explained: ‘It was something that I discovered in writing it that when something stops working, you actually acknowledge it or recognize it for the first time.

‘Through a divorce we could explore a marriage.’

Marriage Story will be on Netflix from this autumn.
