Savvy mum’s guide on how to keep your supermarket costs down for good

YOUR big shop usually means a big spend . . . right?

Wrong. It need not if you follow Lorna Cooper’s guide.

Lorna, 39, of Paisley near Glasgow, is the author of Feed Your Family For £20 (fyf20quid.co.uk).

So she was the perfect person to share some new ways to slash your supermarket bill.

Stock up: Lorna likes to try local farm shops for large portions of veg and she recommends bulk-buying ingredients you will always need.

She says: “I recommend keeping tinned tomatoes, rice, pasta and dried herbs in the cupboard as they can really change a dish.”

My tip: The world-food aisle is a great place to look. Asda’s own-brand tin of coconut milk is 69p but in the world-food aisle I found a tin for 63p.

Sharing is caring: “If you can’t afford to buy in bulk, you can split your shop with other people so you don’t waste food,” Lorna says. “Whether it’s your sister, your aunt or a friend, it’s a good way to help cut the cost and it means supermarket shopping can be fun.”

My tip: Meal-planning with a mate for both families can also help. The app Mealime is good if you are new to meal-planning.
Extra, extra: Bulk out mince with vegetables and lentils. Lorna says: “I used to use 500g of mince for bolognese. My daughter didn’t realise when I took out 300g of the meat and added 100g of lentils.”

My tip: I love this and recently tried making ALL-lentil bolognese. Cutting out the cost of the meat entirely means you could save £2 per meal.

Use your head: Make the most of your freezer so you can plan further ahead. Lorna says: “I recommend buying bags of frozen veg to add to sauces. It keeps longer and still tastes great.”

My tip: Freeze things in portion sizes so you don’t have any waste. And reuse your old ice-cream tubs or cartons to store in your freezer. That spares you from paying for freezer bags.
