Savvy dad’s cash-saving tips for keeping kids occupied during half term — plus book your Hols From £9.50

KIDS can be costly. We spend HALF our salary on children according to a recent study.

That is a huge cut of your cash and special events, such as half term and holidays, can seriously top this up.

I spoke to dad Olly Cator, founder of savvydad.co.uk, for a few of his cash-saving tips for keeping kids occupied . . .

PANCAKE DAY: Want to save pounds on your pancakes?

Olly says: “There’s a savvy gluten-free two ingredient pancake recipe on my website. But, another tip is don’t buy expensive maple syrups or toppings. Instead, raid those cupboards, freezers and fridges to use up leftover jams, chutneys and cheeses.”

DINING OUT: Eating out with kids adds up, and it can become stressful if you are a parent to a picky eater. But there are ways you can enjoy plenty of choice, for less.

Olly says: “There’s a brilliant company called Kids Pass, which offers discounts on different things and they’ll do a one pound trial for 30 days.

“Part of that gives you access to loads of free meals at different venues, such as on Prezzo, Frankie & Benny’s and Giraffe and also Brewers Fayre.”

CINEMA TRIPS: Cinema trips can set you back — so look out for deals.

Olly says: “I think the cinema is one of my biggest bugbears because to get a family out for it, it’s super expensive, but there are loads of deals about at the moment. Groupon has an Odeon offer for two tickets for £10 pounds at the moment, or five tickets for £20.”

WORLD BOOK DAY: Olly says: “Organise a ‘Swap Shop’ with friends, or encourage your school to host one before the day to avoid the unneeded expense and reduce waste. If you are intent on buying your children new World Book Day outfits, consider outlets such as B&M — there is often an array of costumes in end-of-line clearances.

“Or you could raid the grandparent’s wardrobe to help your kids rock the ‘Gangsta Granny’ look.”

‘It is so exciting for all the family’

LITTLE Frankie Portch goes potty over her adventure-packed Sun Holidays.

The six-year-old loved creating her clay model mermaid with help from mum Caroline, who was brushing up on her painting skills.

Frankie enjoys the holiday exploits with Mum and her three siblings, Danny, nine, Paige, 13, and big brother Kieran, 20.

We caught up with the family on their fourth break of last year at Park Holidays New Beach Holiday Park on the Kent coast near Dymchurch.

Caroline, 41, from Orpington, Kent, said: “If the children are having a great holiday, I’m going to have a great holiday.

“There are just so many amazing activities to keep the children busy and enjoying themselves. Frankie really loved the pottery club and as a family we went swimming every day. It’s so exciting for all of us and we have marvellous memories of our quality time together.

“The children are always asking when are we going again. Sun Holidays are fantastic value for money and it has meant that we can get away more often.”

‘Great memories for our children’

GROUNDWORKER Chris Squire enjoyed amazing breaks as a child with his parents – and the memories of great days in the sun are still with him.

Now Chris, 30, is recreating those fun times with partner Abi Orchard, also 30, and their kids.

The couple from Bournemouth took their children to Butlin’s Minehead in Somerset, where they all had the time of their lives.

Chris’ children, Taylor, 11, and six-year-old Amelia, joined forces with Abi’s kids, Riley, 11, and Theo, six.

Also getting into the spirit was Abi’s mum Jill Loe, 54, who is a shop manager.

Chris said: “Sun Holidays and I are both 30. I was practically weaned on them.

“They have just got bigger and better, with such a staggering number of parks you can now choose from.

“I loved those holidays and have so many special memories. I wanted our children to create their own memories, which is exactly what they are doing.”

Abi, a receptionist, says: “There is so much for the children to enjoy.

“Our youngest two love the colourful park characters and the Skyline Gang, who always bring a smile to their faces.

“They never seem to run out of energy.”
