Save time and money in the kitchen this summer with these top tips

AS a nation, we spend on average around seven hours a week in the kitchen.  But with the weather on the turn most of us would rather be relaxing outdoors than inside sweating over a hot stove.

So here’s my round-up of the best time-saving and money-saving items for the kitchen.

Chop your cooking costs with these top tips

Pizza the action: Got friends round for a night in? A pizza is a quick and simple option but cooking two or more can waste time and money on electricity when heating up one after the other. Thankfully, Aldi’s new triple-tier pizza tray stand, £9.99, can cook three pizzas at once. Perfect for family dinners and for serving at parties.

Chop chop: It may seem like a kitchen extra but a mini chopper can provide a steady trickle of savings.  The nifty devices allow you to grind your own spice mixes (much cheaper than buying at the shops), whizz up stale bread to make crumbs for freezing and they are great for making home-made cooking pastes on the cheap.  You can also use some options to grind coffee beans if you don’t have a grinder. It’s a great multitasker. Nab a Salter Mini Chopper Pro for just £14 from The Works, down from £20.

SAVING: £6 on the mini chopper

Crock it: A slow cooker, or crockpot, uses less energy than an oven. It’s also a great way to use up leftover meat and veg — just toss them with some stock and leave to cook for a yummy, chunky soup. It saves preparing a whole new dish.

Woks not to love: Fans of stir-fries and those who like to get dinner on the table quickly should invest in a wok.  After an initial outlay, woks will save you time by cooking food quicker than a standard frying pan. They can also cook a higher volume of food at once, which saves on energy costs. I like the 30cm non-stick wok from Sainsbury’s, £9 — far cheaper than the 28cm option from John Lewis, £35.
