Save the planet and your cash by opting for these ‘simple’ money-saving household goods

PLASTIC is far from fantastic yet most of our homes are full of it.

But with many of us making a conscious effort to use less plastic and recycle more, it’s good to see that the humble, old-fashioned bar of soap is making a comeback.

In fact, sales of traditional soap bars were up three per cent in 2019 — with the number set to rise this year.

Buying these basic items can also cut costs: here’s how a shopping basket of “simple” household goods could slash your supermarket bill . . .

LATHER UP: Swap Dove Silk Glow body wash, £3.99 for 450ml at Superdrug, for a bar of Imperial Leather, currently £1.50 for four 100g bars (38p per bar) at Boots. The old trusty brand lathers easily with super-soft foam, leaving you feeling clean but not dry — plus it is much easier on the wallet and eco-friendly, too. SAVING: £2.49

YES, YOU CAN: Getting your five-a-day with fresh fruit and veg can be costly, but you could save by switching to cans without sacrificing nutrition — as long as you don’t buy them in sauces or syrups. You can really save when buying exotic fruit, such as mangos — £1.50 each at Waitrose, compared to just £1.70 for two cans of Princes Mango Slices at Morrisons (85p per can). SAVING: 65p per unit

DIY: Cleaning products can cost a small fortune, but good old-fashioned lemon and vinegar solutions will have your home gleaming. Simply mix one part vinegar to one part water and add the juice of a lemon for an excellent, fresh-smelling, all-purpose cleaning agent that costs nothing compared with Dettol Power and Fresh Citrus spray, £2 from Tesco. SAVING: £2

POWDER ON: Washing machine pods and capsules can seem less hassle than traditional powders, but they come with a mark-up. Try switching Fairy Non Bio Pods Washing capsules (38 washes), £9 at Waitrose, for Fairy Non Bio washing powder (40 washes), £5, down from £7 at Asda for the same result. SAVING: £4
