Save on packed lunches for the kids with these top money-saving tips – plus play to win £50,000 on the Sun Savers Raffle

FOOD for thought – the school hols are drawing to a close. While that does mean hard-pressed parents don’t need to watch their kids 24/7, it often means stress about the midday meal.

The average cost for a school lunch is around £2 but it could cost a lot less for kids to have a packed lunch — and you needn’t worry about spending ages on the chore, thanks to my top tips . . .

PREP AND SAVE: Prepping a large chicken at the start of the week will save you time and dosh.
Cook up your chosen bird, I like Tesco British Large Whole Chicken, £4 — cheaper than those of a similar size sold at Waitrose, £4.75. Once cooked, use for salads, to fill wraps, sandwiches and in pasta salads. You can add different seasoning each day and it keeps your kids’ lunchbox varied without much hassle or forking out for separate ingredients.

SAVING: 75p

DON’T WOBBLE YOUR WALLET: Make up jelly at home before setting in small Tupperware pots. It works out much cheaper than buying ready-made pots of jelly — small pots at Morrisons cost 50p each, with large blocks of DIY jelly 55p. You can even add your kids’ favourite fruits to jazz things up.

ICY TREAT: No one likes a warm packed lunch, and it’s a rare child who doesn’t loves a sweet treat. So try freezing Frubes or other squeezy yoghurts, not only are they purse-friendly and tasty — they keep the rest of the food nice and cool for little ones, saving on buying an ice pack. You can currently grab three packs of nine for £4 at Tesco — usually costing £2 a box.

SAVING: £2

WASTE NOT WANT NOT: Tend to cook up a big Sunday lunch or large family dinners during the week? Utilise your leftovers to save time and money on lunch ingredients during the week. Whether it be pasta or meat from your Sunday roast – all can be whipped up into easy wraps or bulked up with salad without spending on extra.
