IT is a tradition to give up treats for Lent, which starts today, but cheer up . . . it could save you cash.

CHOC AND MORE: The average person spends around £328 on chocolate every year, equating to just over £6 a week. This means that by giving up your favourite choccy treat you could save yourself £36 over the six weeks of Lent.

WINE O’CLOCK: A bottle of wine costs £5.68 on average — and people drink around 108 bottles a year. So the average yearly spend on wine is £613. Divide that by the 52 weeks of the year and you have your weekly spend of £11.80, put that amount aside for six weeks and you will be left with £70.80.

CRUNCH DOWN: Over the year people eat around 178 packets of crisps, because obviously they are the best snack going, right? This means that we each spend an average of 42p a week on the savoury treat. Multiply that by six and you have got £2.52 stashed away.

CAFFEINE CUT: Possibly the hardest challenge of them all is giving up your morning caffeine fix. We drink around 70million cups of coffee per day, with research showing that at least three of your weekly cups are from a coffee shop. A medium latte from Costa Coffee costs £2.45, multiply that by your three stops and you have got £7.35, multiply that again by six and you end up with £44.10, which you could potentially save just by giving up your morning caffeine hit.
