Pernod the sausage dog was adopted four months ago and her owners soon realised she picked up a unique trick – doing press-ups.

The six-year-old pooch loves doing the exercise alongside 15-year-old Jake Davie.

They work out together every day in the front room of the family home in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

Pernod loves it so much, they have to eventually encourage her to stop before she damages the carpet or exhausts herself – but it has provided them all with a laugh through the pandemic.

Jake’s mum Jill, a 51-year-old mental health nurse, said: ‘It’s a tough time for me at the moment and this has definitely cheered us all up in lockdown.

‘We think Pernod was initially attracted by the noise of the timer.’

When Jake gets down on the floor and starts moving, Pernod sits beside him, keeping her back legs still but pushing at the carpet with her front paws, like she is replicating what he’s doing.

Jill added: ‘As soon as Jake starts doing his press ups she goes up next to him and joins in.

‘When I saw it for the first time, I couldn’t stop laughing.

‘It spurs Jake on, and it gives Perno exercise too.

‘But she’d carry on and on forever if we let her. We have to coax her to stop, otherwise she’d wear a huge hole in the carpet or completely tire herself out.’

If only we were all as motivated as Pernod.
