'Saturday Night Live': Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, Martin Short return for Mother's Day show

Former “Saturday Night Live” cast members Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey and Martin Short all turned up in this weekend’s season finale and Mother’s Day telecast.

Wiig, who was on the show from 2005 to 2012, dusted off her jazz hands and high kicks for a Bob Fosse-inspired dance in her hallway.

“You want some biscuits with this tea?” she asked before flashing the camera. “Let’s start the show.”

She got down on the floor “to get serious” and share that she, like many people, is unable to be with her mom on Mother’s Day, which has always been a big deal on the show and inspired some memorable sketches like “Mom Jeans.”

“SNL is a very special time to celebrate moms and unfortunately, like a lot of you, I can’t actually be with my mom.” So she sent love and wishes to hers, who she said was competing in the “Miss Florida Muscle Lady” body-building competition on Zoom. “I hope you win!”

Tina Fey pops in on ‘Weekend Update’

How is the former “SNL” head writer and mother of two holding up, “Weekend Update” host Michael Che wondered.

“So far so good,” Fey responded. “Like so many of us, I’m trying to focus on the positive. This is a historic time, an opportunity to be still and focus on what really matters in life. For example, I’m getting to spend so much time with my passwords: Apple ID, Hulu, Nintendo, Slack, Zoom, Google Hangouts, Spectrum Cable, Amazon, that other stupid Amazon app for watching things. All my passwords are a little bit different and beautiful in their own ways and I see that now. Also, my kids are here.”

What does she miss doing while in quarantine? “Going to the grocery store. But there are so many different hacks you can get on the internet. Like if you are baking cookies and you don’t have flour, you can go to bed. You can all just shut your mouths and go to bed.”

How’s homeschooling going? “I’ve been making up gibberish and saying it’s Latin.”

She also offered a version of the serenity prayer for moms: “Give us the grace to accept the things that cannot be changed – like the sheets. I’ve changed them like eight times now. I can’t do it anymore. Shouldn’t they just be clean forever now? Give us the courage to change the things we can – like our Zoom background, like a picture of a tropical beach to a picture of (New York) Governor (Andrew) Cuomo holding you like a baby… to a picture of my foot two months ago when it still looked human.”

Martin Short joins in on a Zoom call

Short, who was on the show for the 1984-85 season, took part in one of the show’s now-common Zoom call sketches as one half of an obnoxious couple who quarantined in Italy. No, they didn’t get stuck there while on vacation. They went there after the virus decimated the country because they wanted to “experience the quarantina.”

His traveling companion Deidre (Heidi Gardner) began to explain why: “The food, the people, the wine …”

Short’s character, “Ripley” broke in, saying “We saw none of it. The streets were molto emptissimo.”

One night, however, he said, they felt compelled to “wander the streets and smell the mozzarella air.”

They met and hugged an “authentic Italianio” who, understandably, wasn’t very happy about it. “I grabbed him very aggressively. He was very old with a horrible cough. I gave him the double kiss to show my amore!”

They also boarded what they thought was a cruise but was actually a cargo ship packed with boxes of masks and other personal protective equipment and got yelled at by the captain, who turned out to be a Somali smuggler.

“I’m sorry – just to be clear, you guys were helping ship PPE out of Italy?” their friend Dale (Beck Bennett) asked.

“That sounds exactly right to me,” sniffed Mark (Kenan Thompson), another friend on the call, who was already annoyed by their insistence on calling it “quarantina.” That was the last straw for him: “OK, bye!”
