Sarah Harding confesses she ‘got lost in the pop star glamour’

The real Sarah Harding became ‘utterly lost’ in the glitz and glamour of being a hard-partying pop star, she admits.

Now, the Call The Shots singer is planning ‘to show people the real me’ in a new book.

Sarah, 39, broke her silence to update fans following her breast cancer diagnosis and said she wants to remind everyone who she is really is in her upcoming autobiography Hear Me Out: My Story, My Words, My Life.

At the height of her fame in Girls Aloud, Sarah earned the nickname ‘partying Harding’ at festivals and celeb haunts such as Mahiki.

She had a turbulent romance with the London club’s DJ Tom Crane, and had plans to marry him.

Now, the 2017 Celebrity Big Brother winner explains: ‘I can’t rewrite history; all I can do is be honest and wear my heart on my sleeve.

‘It’s the only way I know. I want to show people the real me… or perhaps remind them.

‘Because somewhere — among the nightclubs, the frocks and hairdos, the big chart hits and the glamour of being a pop star — the other Sarah Harding got utterly lost.

‘She’s the one who’s been forgotten. And all I want is for you to hear her out.’

The book will be published on March 18, and Sarah went on: ‘I called it Hear Me Out because it’s the title of the song I wrote on the second Girls Aloud album and I’ve always really loved it.’

She was diagnosed with cancer last August and it has spread to other parts of her body.

In an Instagram post Sarah told fans: ‘Thank you for the love and support, on bad days it helps me so much. So here’s a little update from me… Mum, the dogs and I had a really lovely but quiet Christmas together, which was different to my usual, but seemed a fitting way to end such a strange year.’

Lydia: the real-life twist in It’s A Sin

The real-life Jill from It’s A Sin ‘doesn’t claim to be Mother Teresa’ says Lydia West, the actress who plays her.

Lydia also revealed how the real Jill was under viewers’ noses all the time… actress Jill Nalder played her character’s mum.

In the Russell T Davies series, a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, Jill is an aspiring actress who shares ‘the Pink Palace’ with a group of gay housemates, including Olly Alexander as Ritchie.

As the Aids pandemic hits ’80s London, Jill takes care not only of her friends but also visits strangers left to die alone in a hospital bed.

Lydia, 27, also starred in another Russell T Davies project, the 2019 drama Years And Years. She said: ‘Russell sent me a message saying, “Jill is inspired by [a] real-life character, she’s a friend I had. She lived in the Pink Palace in the ’80s, and she was a young actress”.’

In an emotional twist by Davies, the actual Jill played Lydia’s mum in the Channel 4 drama. And Lydia says she has never sought recognition for her kindness.

Jill Nalder is based on Jill in It’s A Sin

‘Jill doesn’t claim to be Mother Teresa, she is just a caring, empathic, loving, kind soul,’ she told Wonderland magazine.

‘She didn’t expect a round of applause. She just did it for the love of her friends.’

It’s A Sin has been a career-defining role for Lydia, who was already in her 20s when she started acting. ‘What I loved most about dancing, acting and music was the freedom to tell stories, and that was a later revelation for me,’ she said. See Wonderland magazine, out now.
