Sami Khedira was spotted at the Emirates Stadium ahead of Arsenal’s pre-season friendly against Lyon on Sunday, amid speculation the Gunners are readying a move for the Juventus midfielder.

The 32-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer of 2014 after he played a key role in Germany’s World Cup winning campaign but remained at Real Madrid for another season before joining Juventus a year later.

Khedira’s career has been regularly interrupted by injuries and he managed just 17 appearances in all competitions for Juventus last season.

With Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot joining the Italian champions this summer, competition for midfield places is likely to be more intense than ever and Khedira, who did not feature during Juve’s pre-season tour due to injury, is likely to be deemed surplus to requirements by the club’s new manager Maurizio Sarri.

Earlier this week, Sky Italia’s transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claimed Arsenal were among several clubs to have registered an interest in Khedira, along with Wolves, Valencia and Fiorentina.

Despite Ramsey’s departure, midfield appears to be the one area in which Unai Emery is blessed with an abundance of options heading into the new season, particularly given the arrival of Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid, a deal that was confirmed earlier this week.

Reports earlier this summer claimed both Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira were interesting Serie A clubs, but both now appear certain to remain, while Matteo Guendouzi is expected to continue his development following a promising first season at the club.
